The National Rifle Association (NRA) is pleased to release the latest documentary for the NRA Life of Duty online network, presented by Brownells: “Choosing Honor: The Story of Ed Eaton.”
This Patriot Profile, brought to you by Smith & Wesson, shares the amazing heroism of former Army Sgt. Ed Eaton who, during his tour of duty in Vietnam, saved the lives of his fellow warriors on the ground after a violent helicopter crash.
Outgunned and outnumbered as two groups of Viet Cong advanced, Eaton protected others at the risk of his own life. Atop a helicopter leaking fuel, armed with a broken rifle and facing 30-1 odds, a badly wounded Eaton––just 19 years old––knew what he had to do. “I started yelling for people to throw me weapons,” he said.
This documentary provides an eyewitness account from Eaton and retired Army Maj. Mike Perkins, who was pinned under the helicopter that night. “I kept feeling these hot rounds dropping on me,” Perkins recalled. “And Ed … he’s not panicked; he’s up there calmly putting out shots.” Eaton also coordinated efforts to free Perkins, then refused to leave the crash site on a rescue helicopter until Perkins––his captain––was free.
