Through a new video, the U.S. Forest Service is reaching out to hunters and fishermen in an effort to better inform them about threats from invasive species. From destructive feral hogs to noxious weeds that choke out native grasses, invasive species are an escalating problem sportsmen can help solve.
Developed through a cooperative effort of the Forest Service and several conservation groups, the new 27-minute video is available to help hunters and fishermen identify invasive species and take action to help stop their spread.
The video, “Defending Favorite Places,” is one in a series of invasive species prevention programs targeting the hunting and fishing communities. To view the video (and get more background on the whole issue), visit http://www.fs.fed.us/invasivespecies/prevention/defending.shtml and download it to your computer. There are four versions from which to choose:
1. Video Trailer for education and preview (5:20 minutes)
2. Short version of program (15:20 minutes)
3. Full length program (26:46 minutes)
4. Bonus feature “Ideas on Invasives” (14:30 minutes).
“America’s 50 million hunters and anglers represent our best hope in combating invasive species. They are out on the front line everyday.” says Douglas H. Grann, President and CEO of Wildlife Forever, a major supporter of the video. “The knowledge and information contained in these programs will empower an army of outdoorsmen and women to help take back America’s native habitats. It is our hope that local conservation and sports clubs across the nation will show these programs frequently during their regular meetings.”
Wildlife Forever has also given NRA 50 copies of the video in DVD format. To obtain one, send a message to huntersrights@nrahq.org. Just write “Invasive Species DVD” in the subject line, and NRA will mail you a copy free of charge, while supplies last.
